I had recently learned that in order to find a suitable donor the donor and I would not only need to match blood types but also antibody types. These are done through a simple blood test which can determine which and how many of several critical antibodies each person carries. This is then expressed as a number which represents the percentage of people I will not match with. I honestly expected to hear that my number would be somewhere around forty, meaning I would match with most but not all potential donors. Instead, yesterday I received a phone call saying that my number was zero. This means that I will match with anyone with that has the same blood type as mine, O-. This is great news as it expands the list of potential donors and potentially shortens the amount of time that I will have to wait to receive a kidney.
